چکیده
The objective of this paper is to examine “The Hitchhiking Game” through Louis Althusser’s concept of interpellation. Althusser’s view of ideology and its role in subject formation is mediated by interpellation which was inspired by Lacanian psychoanalysis. An integral part of Lacan’s account of subjectivity is the mirror stage embedded in the Imaginary Order. Althusser’s conception of ideology and interpellation is analogous to Lacan’s the mirror stage, in which the child, confronted with their reflection, misrecognizes it as themselves, forming a preliminary sense of identity. Based on this formulation, this study seeks to argue that the two main characters of this story perform actions and make decisions as a result of interpellative practices that have begun to shape their subjectivities positioning them in a particular relationship with their self-identity and others. Thus, in the analysis of “The Hitchhiking Game”, interpellation represented by four instances of interpellative encounters will be used as the theoretical framework to explain the changing attitudes and perceptions of the characters. The point is to show how interpellative addresses form and sustain a specific mode of subjectivity. Additionally, by examining characters’ interactions in light of interpellation the paper will address the material aspect of ideological interpellation, a point which distinguishes Althusser’s definition of ideology from its traditional conception as a system of false beliefs. This aspect of Althusser will be discussed in the concluding section and in connection with the question of gender and corporeality.
